From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series comes a thrilling novel featuring LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie.
Devon Connor, a single mother, employs Elvis Cole because her troublesome teenage son Tyson is flashing cash and she suspects him of peddling narcotics. The truth, on the other hand, is utterly different. He’s been involved in a spate of high-end burglaries with two others, a criminal spree that takes a terrible turn when one of them is murdered, and Tyson and his girlfriend vanish. They stole the wrong thing from the wrong guy, and he has recruited two men who are brilliant, tough, and the best at what they do to get it back.
Cole calls in his friend Joe Pike to even the odds, but even the two of them may be outmatched. The hired murderers are leaving a trail of victims in their wake, the police don’t want them near the investigation, the youngsters refuse to be discovered, and the police don’t want them near the investigation. They’ll quickly learn all they need to know in order to hunt down the kids, and nothing Elvis or Joe can do will make a difference. It’s possible that they’ll be killed as a result of it.
The Wanted by Robert Crais
A juvenile implicated in a string of high-end thefts is chased by a homicidal, wisecracking duo—possibly corrupt cops—hired to recover a stolen laptop in the latest Elvis Cole novel. Tyson Connor, a 17-year-old Valley boy, has been stashing tens of thousands of dollars from selling stolen items, including watches and jewellery, with his risky new friends Alec and Amber, with whom he’s smitten. Devon, his mother, is aware that he is in difficulty, but suspects that he is involved in drug trafficking. She employs Cole to track out Tyson when he goes missing. The cold-blooded criminals have no qualms about murdering innocent individuals, including a busboy who provided them with information on Alec and Amber and an elderly regular at a flea market where the teenage criminals sold their booty.
Line of Fire by W.E.B. Griffin is quite amazing novel to read.
The Wanted by Robert Crais
The private eye and Devon are able to contact Tyson electronically, with the LA cops on his case as usual and his regular colleague Joe Pike giving assistance. Amber tells Devon’s son that his mother is fabricating things to win Alec back, but a text from Cole regarding the flea-market lady’s death, along with some Googling, makes Tyson question. Crais is one of the most dependable mystery authors on the West Coast, and he’s in fine form here. Though he makes his antagonists a little too much of a comic team, the violence is curiously subdued as a consequence, it’s hard to resist an interaction in which they dispute about the usage of the shower music.
Crais expertly combines several perspectives once again in “The Wanted.” We get to spend time with Elvis and his first-person point of view, but we also get to follow Scott and experience the world through Maggie’s eyes and nose once more. The fact that some of my favorite chapters in a crime novel are written from the perspective of a dog speaks much about Crais’ talent as a writer and his understanding of canines.
It doesn’t take Cole long to figure out that Tyson and his gang have been committing a series of high-end burglaries. In reality, Tyson has been involved in over a dozen robberies with two accomplices. They even got off with $8,000 worth of items from one house at one point, a fortuitous win that left them with more cash than they knew what to do with. However, the kids’ luck ran out when they mistakenly took the incorrect item from a violent man.
Close Combat by W.E.B. Griffin can also be read for enjoyment
In his 21st book, Los Angeles ace Crais (The Promise, 2015, etc.) extends his streak of sharp, enjoyable thrillers.
But, as already stated, they are minor quibbles. The Wanted is a tense, emotionally gratifying thriller that introduces us to one of crime fiction’s most intriguing pairings.
It is hoped Scott James and Maggie will work together again soon.
