The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
Nella is the operator of a hidden apothecary shop in London where she has been peddling poisons, known only by word of mouth among the city’s ladies in The Lost Apothecary. Eliza, a young girl with an interest in her trade, walks into the store one day. Caroline has recently uncovered her husband’s adultery and, while on vacation in London, discovers a clue regarding the apothecary shop’s prior history. She quickly becomes engrossed in a historical research.
Nella awaits her newest customer on a frigid February evening in 1791, in the back of a dark London lane in a clandestine apothecary shop. Nella, who was once a recognized healer, now utilities her skills for a darker purpose: selling poisons to desperate women who would do everything to get rid of the men in their life.
When her new customer turns out to be a clever twelve-year-old called Eliza Fanning, an unexpected relationship begins, putting Nella’s world in jeopardy and threatening to reveal the numerous women whose names are recorded in her register.
Caroline Parcewell, an aspiring historian, spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone in modern-day London, grieving from the discovery of her husband’s adultery. She can’t resist researching an ancient apothecary vial she discovers beside the Thames, only to discover she’s discovered a link to the unsolved “apothecary murders” that plagued London over two centuries ago. Caroline’s life collides with Nella’s and Eliza’s in a dramatic twist of destiny as she continues her hunt – and not everyone will survive.
Eliza Fanning is a lady’s maid who is 12 years old. She is a bright, devoted, and trustworthy young girl who visits Nella on behalf of her mistress, despite her superstitions. She receives detailed instructions on what she needs to buy (and whom the tincture is meant for). She is not, however, unaware of what Nella’s vials contain or what they will achieve. Penner’s absorbing novel, set in an evocative London, glides deftly from past to present, showing the heartaches and unrealized hopes of three intriguing main characters.
