The Killer in the Snow by Alex Pine is one of such novel that tells the horrible story of the crimes who has been raised to life with the help of law enforcement agencies.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series comes a thrilling novel featuring LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie.

It’s been a year since DI James Walker solved his biggest case yet, and he’s looking for some peace and quiet during the holidays. On Christmas Eve, however, a local farmer returns home to find tracks in the new snow heading down to his disused basement — but no footsteps leading away. His body, along with that of his wife and children, is discovered a few days later. There are no witnesses and minimal proof because there are no neighbors for miles. And the crime scene has odd resemblances to another heinous murder that occurred at the farmhouse twenty years before…

The Killer in the Snow by Alex Pine

This narrative begins with a farmer going home on Christmas Eve; it’s snowing in his rural region of Cumbria, and he’s dreading confronting his pressing financial concerns with his family. When he gets back to the property, he discovers some footsteps in the snow heading to his cellar, but no prints leaving it. The murders of the farmer and his family are discovered in the farmhouse a few days later, and DI Walker is brought in to investigate a complicated crime.

DI Walker and his wife are also well-rounded and fascinating primary characters. They’re expecting a child, and there’s a subplot about their history in London that adds some depth and interest to their relationship and predicament – however I believe the subplot seems more high-stakes if you’ve read the previous book.
I thought it was a pity that more of the police squad wasn’t given more to do — the spotlight is so much on Walker that the team lacks unique characters.

The Lost Apothecary Sarah Penner is also interesting novel to read.

The Killer in the Snow by Alex Pine

The narrative is brilliant, and this is a great police procedural novel — I really loved following the investigation as it went through highs, lows, and setbacks. There was plenty going on to keep me interested – but I did predict one of the main disclosures early on, which is why this is a four star rating rather than a five – perhaps I’ve read too many crime novels and am skeptical of everything! However, the suspense is well-managed, and the connection to the earlier incident at the farmhouse adds an intriguing layer to the story.

Anyone who appreciates suspenseful and twisting police procedural will enjoy this. The book contains some quite disturbing concepts and scenarios, so it is probably not for the faint of heart.
However, there’s much to like, and it’d be a fun Christmas read…if bloodbaths are your thing.

But, as already stated, they are minor quibbles. The Killer in the Snow is a tense, emotionally gratifying thriller that introduces us to one of crime fiction’s most intriguing pairings.
It is hoped Scott James and Maggie will work together again soon.
