DI James Walker is rising through the ranks of the London police force, but is forced to relocate to Kirkby Abbey, his wife’s hometown, after a local criminal he arrested gets released and vows vengeance.
Cumbria CID is a breath of fresh air, but that is about to change.

The Christmas Killer Alex Pine

In the tranquil town of Kirkby Abbey, DI James Walker is looking forward to a nice family Christmas. When he opens an early Christmas present placed on his porch, however, he quickly realizes it is not a present.
There’s a horrifying surprise inside, as well as a promise: twelve days, twelve murders.
The first body is discovered shortly later, partly frozen in the snow. As the blizzards hit, dread grows through the isolated Cumbrian village: there’s a serial murderer among them, and with eleven more victims to go, anybody may be next….Will James be able to stop the assailant before they attack again?

Alex Pine has created a dark, atmospheric crime book set in a snowed-in Cumbrian community, the first in a new series, for lovers of Val McDermid and Ross Greenwood.

As the holidays approach, a telegram with the words “Twelve Days, Twelve Murders” comes, along with a dead partridge. When a local philanderer is stabbed and another person dies, it appears like the community is being stalked by a serial murderer. More messages arrive — is there a pattern to the killer’s actions, and are they closer to home than Walker believes? Is it true that there are twelve persons in the community who are deserving of death?

A Lack of Motive by Stephen Penner is very interesting novel to read.

The Christmas Killer Alex Pine

First and foremost, let’s get one thing straight. This isn’t a serial murderer whose atrocities revolve around the 12 days of Christmas. That would, of course, be a dumb thing to do. It’s closer to “Eight days, three or four murders” than “Twelve Days, Twelve Murders,” despite the tagline. He just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting yourself into in case you were mislead. The author does a wonderful job of developing a cast of suspects, and there are a lot of individuals I wouldn’t trust in such a tiny community. Because this is his wife’s hometown, expect a number of long-buried truths to surface, adding to the mystery and expanding the pool of suspects and prospective victims.

Anyone who appreciates suspenseful and twisting police procedural will enjoy this. The book contains some quite disturbing concepts and scenarios, so it is probably not for the faint of heart.
However, there’s much to like, and it’d be a fun Christmas read…if bloodbaths are your thing.

The Secret Warriors by W.E.B. Griffin can be very thrilling and full of action.

But, as already stated, they are minor quibbles. The Christmas Killer is a tense, emotionally gratifying thriller that introduces us to one of crime fiction’s most intriguing pairings.
It is hoped Scott James and Maggie will work together again soon.

If you are looking for fast paced, hard action, this really isn’t the book for you. If you want a solid police thriller with a great central character and a very seasonal twist, then definitely give this a whirl. I’m intrigued to see how the author develops the series, and the characters, from here.
