John Sandford has demonstrated his unrivaled talents for enthralling stories, fascinating characters, cunning wit, and razor-sharp language over the course of thirty-seven volumes. Now, in a breathtaking new thriller co-written with Ctein, he demonstrates it all once more, in a story that is as bold as it is immensely gratifying. It is the year 2066. Something is approaching Saturn and decelerating, as a Caltech intern accidentally sees through a space observatory. Space objects do not slow down. Spaceships are capable of doing so.

Saturn Return by John Sandfrod

After a flurry of high-level government meetings, the inevitable conclusion emerges: whoever built that ship is at least a century ahead of the competition in hard and soft technology, and whoever can get their hands on it exclusively and bring it back will have an advantage so great that no other nation will be able to compete. When the Chinese learn about it, they will undoubtedly agree.

The race is on, and a remarkable adventure begins—an epic tale of courage, treachery, resourcefulness, secrets, surprises, and astounding human and technological discovery, as members of a hastily assembled crew find their strength and wits tested against adversaries both on and beyond the surface of the earth.

The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton is full of suspense and thrill.

What happens is unexpected—and just what you’d expect from one of the world’s greatest suspense masters. What if we discovered an anomaly in the Saturn system that could only be an alien spacecraft?

Most works about the Little Green Men, or LGM, as they’re known in Saturn Run, use a first-contact approach, with a major influence from the history of first encounter between humans during the Age of Exploration. Saturn Run has a unique approach. It’s hard science fiction that acknowledges the existence of aliens but focuses almost entirely on Earth politics and the technological hurdles of reaching Saturn’s orbit. Sandy, also known as Sanders Heacock Darlington, is a trust fund baby and a screw-up.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton is action packed novel.

However, he works part-time at a prominent observatory and happens to be the one who spots the alien vessel. Because it is decelerating, we know it must be a spacecraft. The United States jumps into action to get a ship to Saturn as soon as possible. As it turns out, the spacecraft does not stay, but that does not mean we aren’t curious about where it went and why. And it turns out that China is really curious about where we’re heading and why.

A new space race begins, one that does not finish when the rockets take off. Sandford is a thriller writer, and it shows in his work. That is, he excels at the things you’d expect a thriller writer to excel at. He also does a good job explaining the science behind the fiction, both in a semi-coherent way for a layperson like me and without detracting from the story’s narrative thrust. Saturn Run is a story-driven game rather than a character-driven game.

The characters aren’t exactly flat, but the author doesn’t seem to care about them other than as a means to the plot’s conclusion. Surprisingly, the greatest characters are the President of the United States, who steals every scene she’s in, and Crow, her enigmatic project and ship security liaison and hard science-fiction
