A woman was discovered dead in a block of ice. There’s a chance it’s tied to a high school class from twenty years ago that’s having a mid-winter reunion, so Virgil tightens his coat a little more and starts digging through twenty years’ worth of traumas, feuds, and bad blood. One item comes to mind as a result of the process becomes increasingly clear to him. It’s true what they say: High school is murder.

Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating an unremarkable murder while also working on a very innovative case. Someone bashes Gina Hemming in the head with a champagne bottle shortly after a meeting of the committee to organize her 25th high school reunion the night before she is fished from a frozen river.

There are many suspects, from Lucy and Elroy Cheever, whose business loan application she was about to deny, to heavy-equipment operator Corbel Cain, her sometime lover, to Fred Fitzgerald, who recently purchased a whip from Bernie’s Books, Candles, and Gifts, because Gina has the power of the purse over virtually everyone in Trippton—she inherited the town’s bank on her father’s death—and the bruises on her body suggest habitual S&M play. But none of them killed Gina; the first chapter portrays lovelorn exterminator David Birkmann, who’s had a thing for her since they were in elementary school, killing her when she expresses her disinterest in the most blatant way conceivable.

Sandford has thrown in an unrelated complication: the arrival of LA gumshoe Margaret Griffin, who’s gotten the Minnesota governor’s support in serving a federal cease and desist order against Virgil’s classmate Jesse McGovern, who’s been doing a brisk mail-order business hawking her X-rated creations, Barbie O and Boner Ken, who’s been doing a brisk mail-order business hawking her X-rated creation. On second thought, given the Barbie knockoffs result in Virgil being beaten up by four huge girls and his truck being set on fire, it might be less pleasant for Virgil than for his fan base.

The biggest joys here, as in so many of Sandford’s small-town escapades (Escape Clause, 2016, etc. ), are incidental: clipped dialogues, softly loopy humor, residents mouthing off to and about each other.Take a seat, make yourself at home, and relax.
