He had known that blood was the ultimate stage in every hunt since he was ten years old and began his training. You pursued down a zombie, surrounded it, and moved straight up to it, raising your broadsword and slicing off its head, gushing blood. Even when his father, the finest Hunter who ever lived, handed down his own broadsword to Conrad on the day of his graduation from Artemis, he embraced him and murmured, “Make sure this sword tastes blood every time you hunt.” It had also tasted blood, a lot of it during the last twelve years. Yes, most of the zombies today were youngsters, since most of the zombies were boys and girls under the age of 10.

If you’re looking for an authentic legal thriller with plenty of twists and turns, Land of the Dead by Robert Swartwood is before you.

Conrad gazed down at the broadsword in his hands as he sat alone in the locker room, an erratic dripping coming from the showers. It was only that he didn’t get it. He was baffled as to what had gone wrong.
He had never hesitated before, never once, but this morning he had, and he had no means of explaining it, no way of rationalizing this flagrant blunder, even to himself. Philip, the second lieutenant, strolled in through the locker room door, still wearing his uniform but without his mask. Philip went to his locker, unlocked it, and began to take off his uniform without looking at Conrad. Conrad stared at his sword until Philip slammed his locker door shut and strode toward the showers, a towel wrapped around his waist.

Conrad climbed to his feet and headed to his locker when the hiss of water began up again a few moments later. He lifted his fist, intending to slam it on the panel, but he stopped himself just in time. He opened the locker, expecting to slam it shut again, and saw his wife and son smiling back at him in the grey photos posted there: one of Denise, one of Kyle, one of the two of them together, Denise in a hospital bed holding a newly-animated Kyle in her arms.
