When a gang of teenagers—Allie, Sasha, David, and Julian—discover a gun in their Philadelphia neighbourhood one summer, they decide to play a harmless joke on a new kid by forcing him to play Russian Roulette with the unloaded weapon as a sort of “initiation” into their clique. Instead, tragedy comes as Kyle Gallagher succumbs to his self-inflicted wounds. Kyle was killed by a 38-round bullet to the head, an event that haunts the other members twenty years later as they carefully preserve their dark secret… until fresh evidence comes showing Kyle’s murder was not an accident after all.

Years later, after a funeral, Allie Garvey realizes she can no longer bear the weight of what they did and have been hiding for so long, and confronts the other members of the gang, a decision that has immediate ramifications for everyone. Worse, it becomes evident that someone knows what occurred, and as Allie hunts for the truth, she unwittingly uncovers additional secrets, exposing one awful, nasty reality after another—leading to a shocking conclusion that readers will never see coming.

Scottoline shifts back and forth between the 1990s and the current day, eventually exposing what truly happened via the views of everyone involved, including the parents. While introducing so many people slows the tale down a little in the beginning, the well-crafted storyline and Scottoline’s powerful prose will keep readers hooked and interested far into the second act, when things really get going. It’s difficult to completely surprise readers these days, especially in the post-Gone Girl world.
Today’s reader has seen it all, from unreliable narrators to unexpected twists that offer more shock than substance, which is why Scottoline’s latest offering is so special—she lands that coveted haymaker, one that will leave her fans reeling and have people talking about her book for a long, long time.
